Hey everyone, I just upgraded from macOS Sierra 10.12.6 via the App Store. It was rather painless, except for the things I forgot to do. In this tutorial, I will explain how to upgrade without the use of a flash drive on a Hackintosh.
Step 1 - Prerequisites
Before you download the macOS High Sierra installer, make sure you are on macOS Sierra 10.12.6. If you are not, then you'll get the "lite" installer which is only around 30 MB, and is not the normal 5 GB. This is also an issue if you go to create a USB installer, so you MUST be on 10.12.6 before you download the installer.
Step 2 - Preparing your system
You'll first need to update the Clover bootloader to version r4220. You can do so by downloading it here.
You'll then need to download and install APFS.efi into the EFI partition in the directory /Volumes/EFI/EFI/Clover/drivers64UEFI/.
Step 3 - Make sure you have backups
Given the nature of Hackintosh systems, backups are essential for upgrading macOS. Time Machine backups are great, and are almost seamless if you have a Linux server with netatalk installed.
Hopefully this guide helped you out! If it did, like the guide so I have reason to make more guides like this.
